A year ago, we set out to explore the state of Finnish school buildings in 2024, asking why they are the way they are. Are they safe? Have they been designed or procured well enough? How do learners feel about their schools, what is their well-being like, and how stressful are school days in new school buildings? How well do our school buildings accommodate diversity, foster a sense of community, or support various forms of learning? And most importantly, how well are Finnish teachers equipped to work in modern learning environments, and how well have they been trained to utilize these environments effectively? These are just some of the questions we’ve aimed to answer over the course of 2024, requiring the development of entirely new research and measurement methods, as well as standards.
To our surprise, we discovered that the last comprehensive study of this kind in Finland was conducted in 1974, during the introduction of the comprehensive school system! This research marks one of the first steps toward understanding the functionality of modern learning environments.
We will publish the findings of this study on January 27, 2025, at 1:00 PM, and we warmly invite everyone to join the release event.
